National Minimum Wage Inspections

The national minimum wage is policed and enforced by HM Revenue and Customs and sets minimum hourly rates that employers must pay their workers. It covers almost all workers in the UK.

The rules in this area can be complicated and many employers fall foul of the regulations, often where apprentices are concerned, or casual workers are involved. For example:

  • what is shown in your contracts of employment?
  • do you have timesheets for all workers?
  • do you provide staff uniform? or ask them to provide their own?
  • does anyone stay late? or have to come in early ready to start their shift?
  • are you sure you know your staffs’ birthdays, they may be due a pay rise?

If you receive a call or letter from HMRC contact Lindsay for assistance as a rigorous defence may be needed to protect your position and the earlier the better. Many inspections are as a result of malice or are based on hearsay evidence.

The investigators are not always easy to deal with and their powers are great with the threat of criminal action always in the background in all National Minimum Wage Enquiries.
