Budget 2025!!
More staff at HMRC to investigate wealthy offshore non-compliance with tax liabilities.
Whether you call this a pledge by HMRC or a threat, HMRC are to hire around 400 more specialist staff to tackle what they call wealthy offshore non-compliance. This is estimated to bring in an extra £500 million over the next five years. How are they to do this. Well, they are to introduce the new US-style scheme later this year in 2025 under which tax avoidance informants will get a slice of any money recovered and this may prove extremely beneficial for HMRC.
But will this only relate to offshore evasion?
For years there has been Tax Evasion online forms and hotlines where people could log on and notify details of people, they believe are avoiding their tax liabilities.
But now, where money is involved, it may escalate.
If you know there is some serious tax evasion going on, whether that might be furlough fraud, turnover fraud through till systems or doing work that is not invoiced to customers, if people realise, they may be paid for this information there may be a lot more people coming forward to give evidence.
Watch this space, but with 400 more HMRC staff specially trained for this particular type of work, I’m sure we will start seeing a lot more news about this in the newspapers.
If you believe that you might be at risk of someone reporting you to HMRC (and the bulk of informants are very often disgruntled employees, or ex-wives or ex-husbands, or more importantly your competition locally), then get in touch with us and beat them to it.
We can make a voluntary disclosure for you of anything you think someone else might be flagging up to HMRC. It’s much cheaper and quicker for you to do it yourself as you will benefit from much lower penalties if you come forward voluntarily before HMRC receive the information.
