HMRC are still taking the ‘lead’ in dog breeder tax investigations

Since June HMRC have been sending out their blanket coverage letters to all people breeding puppies in the UK, for whom they believe have not declared it to them.

These started around June but are still going out every Friday and have gone out right up to today’s date – so Friday the 13th is still an unlucky day for many.

Whilst I have been dealing with numerous cases since the summer they are still flooding in and range from people having an ‘accidental’ litter – never to be repeated, or a one-off litter that they decided to have during the COVID year 20/21 when puppy prices were exceptionally high, to those who have been breeding on a regular annual basis for up to the past 20 years. Those enquiries into one-off litters would seem to be an extremely punitive move by HMRC for an activity that would never normally be deemed a trade. But they expect your disclosure, so contact Lindsay for a quote if you have been caught under this current HMRC campaign and have had one of their letters asking you to notify and make that disclosure and she will talk you through it, or take the pressure off you and do it all for you.
