Basically, the initial letter gives you 30 days to start the process and once this has been done by an online notification, you then have a further 90 days to pull together your profit figures and make the disclosure. But this is not as easy as it sounds.

You are expected to declare precisely how much money you have made from the sales and claim only expenses allowable by HMRC in law. Something a layman would be probably unaware of.

On top of that you must calculate the exact amount of tax and Class 4 National insurance on those profits. HMRC then expect you to calculate and pay interest to them on the tax you have essentially paid late, and the further blow is that you are charged a penalty based on whether your failure to declare this income was deliberate or non-deliberate and the penalties for these differ greatly.
