Travel Expenses – Can I Claim Them?

This is a question fraught with ‘if’s and but’s’ but here is an overview. Lindsay is keen to help if you have specific question relating to your own situation.

First HMRC exclude what they term as ‘ordinary commuting’ basically this is ordinary commuting to and from your home.

There are ways to claim ‘ordinary commuting’ expenses, but these rely on your place of work and if permanent, this is classed as your ordinary commute payable out of your own income.  If you work at a temporary workplace, contact Lindsay to discuss the eligibility of your travel.

Due to the pandemic, many employees work at home at least part of the week. The main test is whether home working is voluntary and perhaps then your journeys into work are not treated as ordinary commuting and employees can claim expenses.

She has recently had great success defending a large travel expense claim originally denied by HMRC thus saving her client around £40,000 in tax etc.

If you’ve got any problems regarding your tax? Lindsay will be happy to give you her advice, so give Lindsay a call on 07879 464 577 for a friendly chat.
