Behind the scenes HMRC continue to use sophisticated methods to monitor activity they believe may lead to an evasion of tax. Their view is that it is fair game as those who are declaring their income to HMRC as the law requires will have nothing to worry about.

These days we turn to the Internet for seemingly everything from booking our holiday accommodation, our taxis, takeaway meals, man with a van, as well as buying a pet!

The law allows HMRC to approach these online platforms where money              changes hands or it involves commission being paid.

HMRC monitor eBay and Airbnb to check up on feedback and activity with dedicated  teams of ‘data analysts’ and intelligence gatherers,  forcing  auction and payment sites to hand over your details.

What is to follow now is intrusion into the affairs of those selling via Etsy and eBay with Airbnb landlords being targeted too.
